St. Charles Area Guide
HistorySt. Charles County is located where the Mississippi and Missouri Rivers meet just north of St. Louis. American settlers began moving to this area in the 1790s, and the famous frontiersman, Daniel Boone, became the first St. Charles resident when he built a home in Defiance in 1799. Originally named San Carlos, the name of the county was Anglicized to St. Charles in 1804 following the finalization of the Louisiana Purchase. In 1821 when Missouri became a state, the brick buildings on Main Street served as the seat of the state government until the capitol building was completed in Jefferson City. The buildings were restored in the 1960s and are a pleasant walk from the new St. Charles Visitors Center. Restaurants, boutiques, and bed and breakfasts can also be found in the St. Charles Historic District.
